DadaVision Redux

Wednesdays at 10:00 PM - 11:00 PM

Hosted by Ken French

DadaVision Redux is a radio show hosted by Ken French that pays tribute to a group of musicians and artists who were active in western Massachusetts during the 80s and 90s. Following in the footsteps of Brian Eno, Alan Watts and Laurie Anderson they combined disparate audio elements into complex sound montages defying the conventional techniques and sounds of the time.

Each week Ken and his various guests will listen and react to original recordings from the cassette tape archives left by his brother Stiv on his passing in July, 2019. In time we are also hopeful that new works will be created on this show, expanding on the DadaVision legacy.

The original DadaVision radio show was conceived on Jan. 20, 1983 (The day Ronald Reagan was inaugurated). The show originally aired on the UMass radio station, WMUA, and was hosted by Dana Gentes and a group of collaborators that included Stiv French, Daxe Rexford, Mark Slinsky, Steve Westfield and John Brobst. It continued in various incarnations, including live performances, through the 80s and 90s. DadaVision was always a moving target, spinning off a myriad of projects and groups with names like The Pajama Slave Dancers, Check Please, Solid Fun, The Vitamin Club, the Avant Bards and Devo Christ Superstar. In 1990 Stiv French and Steve Westfield started another show, “What is Radio?” on WSKB at Westfield State College that carried on the tradition.

As part of the DadaVision collective, Stiv French also produced several albums of original material including “Stiv It Up”, “Stiv Till it Hurts”, “Live and Let Stiv”, “Vitamin Stiv” and “CasioPiaZadora”. This show is dedicated to his memory.
