Working at WBTV-LP as a programmer in the past 6 months has been such a positive experience for me as an artist.
Before I was given my training in the radio studio, I was going through a challenging phase where I felt like the tools I needed for self-expression were out of my reach financially.
I was so surprised and excited to see what the Media Factory was prepared to offer me, in terms of both training and hardware, not to mention a community framework to operate in. But the real surprise was how my radio show helped me discover a new side of myself and my artistic identity.
In the training leading up to being a radio programmer, we were encouraged to think deeply about ourselves and our place in the Burlington – to try to figure out what story we were trying to tell. Just engaging this exercise had lead me down a new chapter in my artistic work, using deejaying and music to explore the nature of oppression and freedom in our own community.
Radio is my voice in a society where repression and marginalization are on the rise.
