Meet Phil, Host of STEAM Lab on 99.3 WBTV-LP!

Meet Phil, host of STEAM Lab. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. Phil and his co host, Dr. Kyle, discuss anything and everything science related.

Q: What is special about WBTV-LP?
A: The amazing thing about WBTV-LP is that along with being an entertaining radio station where you can catch all sorts of shows, it is also a learning radio station. If you wanted to do this and get involved with this form of media you can come in and take classes. I taught one recently, it was a listening lab and I met with a group of folks that really wanted to get into radio. It doesn’t cost you a thing, this is a community radio station, it is an opportunity to not just listen but also engage directly and get involved to create your own material.

Q: Why choose WBTV-LP?
A: We’ve made our home at WBTV-LP because we want to engage, educate, and entertain the local community and, hopefully, the world. We are looking for folks to get interested in science, technology, and engineering topics, even some art and mathematics (hence the acronym). We want to get folks thinking about this stuff, it’s educational, but we are having a good time and some fun.

Q: What does your show consist of?
A: We have good guests that come in to talk about things from jazz to photography to architecture. My co-host, his name is Dr. Kyle, he is a medical student at the University of Vermont.

Q: What sets your show apart from others?
A: What sets our show apart from other shows is that we have time. We have time to get into topics that other radio shows do not have the opportunity to. We have two hours, we can do whatever we like with those. This isn’t commercial radio, we still have time to get in depth. Most of the time with talk radio it’s a mile wide and an inch deep, with STEAM Lab we get to go as deep as we want to (depending on what the audience wants to hear).

Listen to STEAM Lab on Sundays from 6:00-8:00 P.M. on 99.3 WBTV-LP, or online at 993wbtv.org.

Meet Katherine Stamper, Host of Present Time on 99.3 WBTV-LP!

Meet Katherine Stamper, host of Present Time on 99.3 WBTV-LP.  Katherine interviews people with interesting or unusual stories, talking about important local issues.

Q: What sets your show a part from similar interview shows?

A: What sets my show apart from other similar interview shows, is that I’m very intentional in trying to bring those less represented in our society to the microphone.  So I like to interview people with interesting stories; I’ve brought in a lot of refugee folks, people representative of nonprofit organizations doing some really important work.  Vermont is this bucolic, beautiful state and with all that beauty there are still people struggling with some pretty significant human services related issues. It’s giving voice to those who we might not otherwise hear.

Q: How do you chose the music for your show?

A: The music that I play tends to be music from film, simply because I love film.  There’s no necessary connection, I just try to give people some good music to listen to before the interview starts.

Q: What do you like about WBTV-LP?

A: I think what sets WBTV-LP apart from other radio stations is that the content is created locally.  We are not beholden to advertisers and there’s an amazing diversity of voices that are brought to the microphone here.

Q: How did you come about broadcasting from WBTV-LP?

A: I broadcast from WBTV-LP because a friend of mine told me about this opportunity and I am a mid-career, nonprofit professional and I thought, “Why not try something new?”  Being on radio sounded exciting and it also sounded terrifying. It’s ended up being a really amazing experience and it’s right here in Burlington with this wonderful facility and wonderful resources.

Listen to Present Time every other Friday from 9:15-11:00A.M. on 99.3FM WBTV-LP, or online at 993wbtv.org.

Meet Morella Devost, Host of Thrive with Morella on 99.3 WBTV-LP!

Meet Morella Devost, host of Thrive with Morella.  While being a radio show, it is also streamed on Facebook live.  Morella talks about anything body, mind, heart, or spirit.

Q: What is your show?

A: It’s a show that’s about the entirety of the human experience.  Where as other shows might just be about physical health, money, or spirituality, I like to bring people from all different fields that are all about helping people thrive in their lives.  For somebody it might be thriving in their physical health, like a show about Lyme disease, but I could also do a show about finances. It spans a broad range of fields of the human experience that I believe are all related to thriving.

Q: How did you come to WBTV-LP?

A: Several years ago I was a producer and host of a show at VCAM, that show was Holistically Speaking.  I did that show for a number of years and I had to take a break.  I was ready to come back to do another show, which I wanted to do not just through the local channels but I wanted to broadcast it onto Facebook Live.  I came to talk to the folks at VCAM and said to do it with radio as well. So that’s how I came to be in the radio booth, and I love it.

Listen to Thrive with Morella every Monday from 1:00-3:00 P.M. on 99.3 WBTV-LP, or online at 993wbtv.org.
